I am a woman in my 40's who has long suffered from insomnia and sleep disturbances in varying levels of gravity and duration over my adulthood. However, it wasn't until February of 2017 that I started experiencing these body jerks as I was falling asleep, often while quite lucid, on an almost daily basis with very little relief. Read my full story in my first post.
In attempting to research Hypnic Jerks/Sleep Starts/Myoclonic Twitches/Myoclonus (whatever you want to call it!), I found there was very little support and information for those of us that suffer from them more than occasionally. While, in and of themselves, they are medically harmless, those of us that suffer for hours every night and do not get enough sleep know that the mental anxiety and frustration and the sleep deprivation is harmful to our bodies.
While I was scouring the internet, I happened to find the blog of The Man Who Cannot Sleep who suffered from the same ailment. I saw many people commenting on his blog posts who were suffering the same symptoms with little relief, feeling frustrated at how little information was out there. It appears he has not posted since February of 2016, yet people have continued to comment about their stories and frustrations well into 2017. I thought I might continue The Man Who Cannot Sleep's legacy by starting my own blog to help others as well as myself.
In addition, I started a forum called We Cannot Sleep, which is specifically geared toward Hypnic Jerks/Sleep Starts/Myoclonic Twitches/Myoclonus. I know often we suffer from other sleep disorders conccurently, so I put some boards in for those as well, but I wanted the main focus to be the muscle jerks, as we have all found there is very little support and information in one place. I feel that having this forum will make it easier to share information than searching through comments on my blog or the The Man Who Cannot Sleep's blog.
While the forum will be a great place for conversation, I will write about my journey here, and I have pages that will serve as a collection of information I learn in the forums and in my research. These pages include Causes, Treatment, Resources, and Sleep Tracking. These pages are always a work in progress, so you might want to check back from time to time.
I hope you can find some comfort and information here and in the forum that will lead you on your journey to managing or curing this tortuous cycle and getting some peaceful sleep.
